PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
By Dan Massart, Chapter President

I want to take this opportunity to thank all our committee chairs for their hard work during the year, keeping our chapter strong and growing. The chairs are Gordon Guthrie (Membership Promotion), Mark Nightlinger (Membership), Scott Rushing (TEGA), Linda Coppa (Website), John Bergo (Research Promotion, Auditing, Refrigeration & Nomination and Awards), Pete Crelley (Publicity), Punchlist (Rob Kuchcinski), John Thorpe (Historian, Photography & Puget Sound Engineering Council) and Pat Burns (Field Day). Their hard work and dedication to the Chapter is greatly appreciated.

As everyone gets ready for the upcoming holiday season it is an excellent time to make your reservations for the Winter meeting in Atlantic City that runs from January 11 to the 16th if you haven’t done so already. If you have not gotten your meeting planner you can go to the society’s website at www.ashrae.org for more information. To get to Atlantic City you can fly to Philadelphia, New York, Newark, or Washington, DC. I know many people who are going to fly to New York and spend some time there before they either drive to Atlantic City or take the train. Everyone I have talked to wants to see Ground Zero and help support the city. I have family in Washington DC so I am taking advantage of new direct flights to DC with our local airlines and I am going to spend some time in Washington, DC before driving to Atlantic City. I hope to see many of you there.

Sincerely, Dan Massart

MCGOWAN BROZ PRINCIPAL GAINS SUSTAINABLE DESIGN CERTIFICATION
Bill Broz, P.E., Manager of Mechanical Engineering at McGowan Broz Engineers recently earned his certification as a LEEDTM Accredited Professional. Certification under the LEEDTM (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program signifies expertise in all aspects of sustainable design, and is awarded by the U. S. Green Building Council.

"This certification is one part of our long-term strategy to exercise leadership in forwarding the goals of sustainable design within our community," Broz remarked. "Environmentally friendly, or ‘Green’ design has been integral to our firm’s mission from the beginning, but the impetus for sustainability has picked up a lot of momentum over the last two years or so. As a result, we have become much more systematic in our collaboration with architects and owners to produce sustainable design projects, including those certified through the LEED program."

Bellevue-based McGowan Broz Engineers, a 20-person mechanical and electrical engineering firm, has several projects currently slated for LEEDTM certification, including the new Capitol Hill Library for Seattle Public Libraries; the Terminal Radar Approach Control Facility (TRACON) for the Federal Aviation Administration; and the International District Village Square Phase 2 mixed-use development.

WORKSHOP TOPIC
"Convergence:  Natural Gas and Electricity in Washington.
A Survey of the Pacific Northwest Natural Gas
Industry on the Eve of a New Era in Electric Generation."
Speaker: Arne Olson, Washington State Energy Office.

The report examines trends in the demand for and supply of natural gas for Washington and the Pacific Northwest in light of current plans to construct several thousand megawatts of new natural gas-fired electric generating capacity.  Construction of even a fraction of the projects that have been
proposed for Washington, Oregon, and Idaho will greatly increase the region's demand for natural gas.  This raises serious questions about the ability of the region's gas delivery system to meet this new demand without adverse consequences for existing natural gas consumers.  The extreme price
events of the last several months, caused in part by a sudden, large increase in consumption of natural gas for electricity generation, provide a cautionary example of the strong forces that can be unleashed by unplanned demand growth.

The report is available on the web at:
http://www.energy.cted.wa.gov/.

"Arne was born and raised in Wenatchee, Washington, and attended the University of Washington, where he earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics and Statistics.  He earned a Master of Science degree in International Energy Management and Policy through a collaborative program between the Graduate School of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania, and the National Superior School of Petroleum and Motors at the French Petroleum Institute in Paris.

Arne worked for three years as a consultant in Washington, DC, before joining the Policy Division of the Washington State Energy Office in 1996, now the Energy Division of the Office of Trade and Economic Development. Arne's primary areas of responsibility include tracking wholesale
electricity, natural gas and petroleum markets, conducting analyses related to demand for and supply of energy in Washington and the Pacific Northwest, and representing the state's interest in regional forums related to electric transmission."
